![]() ![]() ![]() Some fish are common, others are occasional visitors from the depths of the Atlantic, but all are fascinating. This vast territory of about 150 000 km2 is populated with a varied fauna. Lawrence: pelagic and estuarine fish were poorly represented in our samples, with rocky or steep bottoms generally not trawlable. The data from these surveys provide only a partial view of the fish communities in the St. Unusual species have either a boreal or southern distribution and generally frequent the continental shelf or even the continental slope above the abyssal plain in the Atlantic. The most abundant species in the catches were also those that were recorded in a larger proportion of the sampled stations. Catches have been largely dominated by four commercially valuable predator species: Greenland halibut, two species of redfish and Atlantic cod, but there are more than 100 species of which half can be considered rare on trawl bottoms.
